Warsaw Wins Football Regional

Home semi-state game Friday

The Warsaw football team is in the final 4 of Class 5A In Indiana after knocking off second-ranked and previously unbeaten Lafayette Jeff 44-27 at Fisher Field Friday night.

The Tigers will host Merrillville in the North semi-state championship game Friday night. Game time has not been determined.

The turning point in the regional came late in the third quarter.

With the game tied at 21 and the Bronchos backed up inside their own 20 on fourth down and long, the Jeff long-snapper snapped the ball over the punter's head and out the back of the end zone for a safety, putting Warsaw ahead 23-21.

Warsaw's Tristan Wilson returned the free kick that followed to the Jeff 48 yard line. The Warsaw offense then pounded their way toward the end zone and scored a touchdown on a 7-yard run by Quinton Brock on the first play of the fourth quarter that put the TIgers up by 9.

Jeff answered with a touchdown of their own but failed on their 2-point conversation attempt to leave the Tigers ahead 30-27.

Warsaw would make it a two-score game on an 16-yard halfback pass from Quinton Brock to Ethan Egolf, who didn't see the ball until the very last second in the back of end zone. A 13-run by QB Drew Sullivan with 2:21 to play removed all doubt in the outcome.

Sullivan carried the ball 32 times for 310 yards on the night. That is tied for the third most rushing yards in a game by an individual--tied with Tiger football legend and current Merrillville coach Brad Seiss back in 2000 against Wawasee.

Quinton Brock completed a unique "hat trick" by throwing a touchdown pass, receiving a touchdown pass and running for a touchdown.

Warsaw scored 44 against a Jeff defense that had only allowed 15 points per game for the first 11 games of the season.

It's the first regional football title in school history.

In the last two weeks of the playoffs, Warsaw has defeated #1 Concord and #2 Lafayette Jeff, and now faces #3 Merrillville in the semi-state with a trip to the 5A state championship on the line. #4 Decatur Central and #13 Bloomington South play Friday to represent the south in the 5A Final.
