Warsaw's Unified flag football squad beat Tippecanoe Valley under the lights of Fisher Field 45-32 Wednesday night.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden hue across Fisher Field, Ben Slabach found himself in the end zone surrounded by Tippecanoe Valley Vikings. Scanning through the defense for his sure-handed wide out was senior quarterback, Elijah Wright. Slabach, who was well defended, was heading to the back right corner of the endzone. Time seemed to slow to a crawl. Slabach, leaping into the air, soared above two Viking defenders who had locked their sights on him. Extending his arms and snatching the ball at its apex, he cradled it against his chest as the Valley defenders fell to the ground.
The crowd erupted as Slabach raised his arms in triumph. Pandemonium ensued as the players rushed the field chanting, "Ben Slabach, Ben Slabach!" This wasn't just a touchdown; it was a defining moment for The Tigers. Coach Ryan Bricker said, " I felt like Jim Valvano running around just looking for someone to hug. I will never forget Ben's catch. I don't think anyone will."
Haley Schrock, Camryn Burner, Griffin Brown, and Whitney Dawson all made significant contributions on the defensive side of the ball. Braylie Chastain was working overtime pulling flags all night long. Warsaw, who has won 3 of their last 4 games, is peaking at the perfect time.
The Tigers beat the Vikings 45-32 to end the regular season. Warsaw plays Homestead in the first round of the sectional on Saturday morning. Kickoff is 11:00 AM.
