Tigers Plow Through Panthers

Warsaw put up their best all-around effort Friday in a 45-21 win over NorthWood at Fisher Field Friday.

The Tiger offense was a huge part of that, rushing for 416 yards on 59 carries--both season highs.

Reed Zollinger alone carried the ball 45 times for 313 yards. Only Tristan McClone had more rushing yards in a game when he went for 322 yards and 5 touchdowns at Northridge in 2012. The 45 carries for Zollinger was tied for second all-time to Tony Boley's 54 in 1974.

The defense held up their end by shutting out the Panthers after halftime, forcing five turnovers. The Tiger offense scored on the possession following four of those turnovers. The only one they didn't score after was the possession where the Tigers ran off the final 5:50 to end the game.

There were two key moments in the game.

The first came just before halftime. NorthWood scored with :24 left in the second quarter to take a 21-17 lead. A touchback would force the Tigers to start from the 20 yard line, and rather than take a knee and focus on halftime adjustments, the Tiger coaching staff ran Zollinger up the middle for 25 yards. The following play was a counter run by Luke Ransbottom, who got to the NorthWood sideline and followed his blocking for 55 yards and a touchdown with :07 left in the half. The extra point by Mason Smythe was good, and the Tigers had taken the lead back 24-21.

The other key moment came in the 3rd quarter.

With Warsaw leading by 10, the Panthers put together a drive that got them to the Tiger 4 yard line. QB Owen Roeder faked a handoff and took the ball to his right and then cut up field for what looked like an easy touchdown. But Jette Woodward reached in and poked the ball loose. It flipped in the air and Daylor Vilamaa took off with it from just outside the goal line and raced the other direction. He made it to the 42 yard line and the Tigers would go on to score and, essentially, put the game away.

Warsaw will now prepare for a showdown for the NLC lead at Mishawaka next Friday night.
