A furious fourth-quarter rally ran out of time as Lawrence North won the 4A state basketball title with a 65-59 win over the Lady Tigers Saturday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The Wildcats outscored the Lady Tigers 36-18 in the middle two quarters and led by 19 in the fourth quarter, but Warsaw found the range from distance in the fourth with four 3-pointers in the first three minutes to get to within seven points at 56-49 and plenty of time to play. Eventually Warsaw trimmed the deficit to 3 in the final minute, but North's Kee Kee Butler hit four free throws in the game's final 25 seconds to secure the win.
Brooke Winchester led the Lady Tigers in scoring in her final high school game with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 2 blocks. Joslyn Bricker added 13 and Brooke Zartman 12.
After the game, Abbey Peterson was named Patricia Roy Mental Attitude Award winner for 2025 in 4A girls basketball. That award goes to a senior basketball player on a state finalist team that is a quality student, quality member of the community and quality representative of their school.
Warsaw ends the season with a school record-tying 26 wins and as state runner-up for the third time in the 50 years of the girls state tournament.
Special thanks to Tripp Insurance, Warsaw GMC, Rayco Tools and the Kosciusko County Sherrif's Department for helping cover the costs of our students' tickets to the state finals Saturday night.
