Tigers Come Up Short in State Football Final

Despite rushing for 337 yards and passing for 103, the Tigers could not overcome the high-octane offense of Decatue Central in a 38-24 loss in the 5A state championship game Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Hawk offense racked up 421 yards of total offense and 22 first downs.

Warsaw committed 5 turnovers (3 lost fumbles and 2 interceptions) that led to 14 Hawks' points, which turned out to be the difference in the game.

DC held Tiger QB Drew Sullivan to just 25 yards on 18 carries after had amassed 600 yards on 97 carries in the last three playoff games. The Tigers came up just short of having three 100-yard rushers in the game, with Brody Duncan running for 101 and a touchdown, Tucker Reed 99 and Quinton Brock 98.

The Tigers scored on the opening drive of the 3rd quarter to cut their deficit to 7 at 24-17. But DC answered with a touchdown of their own on the following drive to go back up by 14.

The Tigers end the season at 10-4 and state runner-up for the first time ever.

Sullivan was named winner of the IHSAA' Mental Attitude Award winner for 5A Football.

The team will be honored at Tuesday night's boys basketball home opener against Columbia City. That ceremony will take place immediately after the junior varsity game.
