Late Field Goals Lift Tigers to Victory

Kicker Mason Smythe booted field goals of 26 and 38 yards in the final five minutes of the game to help Warsaw to an 8-6 road win at Chesterton Friday.

The second field goal, which came with about :25 seconds left in the game (power to the clock and some of the lights went out in the 4th quarter), gave the Tigers the lead for good. A last-second heave down the field by the Trojans was knocked down on what was the last play of the game.

It was a strange game, to be sure.

Neither team could move the scoreboard in the first half. Warsaw had five possessions: they lost 3 fumbles, one drive ended on downs and the other ended at halftime. A goal line stand by the Tiger defense just before halftime kept Chesterton scoreless.

Warsaw put together a terrific drive on the opening possession of the 3rd quarter, but a 4th-and-goal play at the one yard line came up inches short.

Then the defense got the Tigers on the board.

On the first play for Chesterton, the Tiger defensive line tackled the quarterback in the end zone on a sneak attempt for a safety and a 2-0 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Warsaw went on another long march down the field, but that stalled out at the Trojan 18.

The momentum of that stop fired up the home side, and Chesterton moved down the field through the air and scored the game's only touchdown with 9:29 to play on a 16-yard pass from Sebastian Boswell to Alex Santucci. The extra point was blocked and the score remained 6-2.

Warsaw's last two drives ended with field goals: a 28-yarder with 4:45 left and the game-winner with about :25 left.

The loss of the scoreboard added to the drama of the final 4:28, because no one but the people on the field knew exactly how much time was left in the game.

Once again the Tiger defense was dominant, holding the Trojans to 23 rushing yards and 166 total yards.

The Tigers are 2-0 and travel to Plymouth Friday to open Northern Lakes Conference play. Kickoff is at 7pm.
