Warsaw's football season came to an end with a 31-10 loss to Penn in the 6A Playoffs Friday at Everwise Freed Field.
After an early punt by the Tigers, Penn QB Nolan McCullough turned a third down into a 53-yard touchdown run that put the Tigers in a 7-0 hole.
Warsaw responded with a drive that stalled out at the Penn 29, but K Mason Smythe booted a 47-yard field goal to get the Tigers on the board. Smythe made 12 of 15 field goal attempts this season--both are school records.
The defense rose to the occasion and forced Penn to punt into a strong wind, and the Tigers found themselves with great field position at the Kingsmen 43. But a illegal block shoved the Tigers back on their side of midfield and the opportunity to take the lead went away.
Up 7-3 at the half, Penn took the opening kickoff 80 yards in 4:39 to push the lead out to 14-3, and their defense did the rest.
Penn recovered a Tiger fumble and intercepted two passes on consecutive possessions to put the game away.
Warsaw scored on an option pitch to Quinton Brock, who scampered 74 yards up the east sideline for the Tigers only touchdown of the game.
Reed Zollinger was held to 14 carries for only 43 yards in his final game as a Tiger. Zollinger finished the season with 291 carries (4th most in school history for a season), 1,647 yards (3rd most in a season) and 18 touchdowns.
Warsaw ends the season with a 9-2 record and a share of the Northern Lakes Conference championship.
