Boys Basketball Ends St. Joe Win Streak at Five

The Warsaw Tigers went to Grace College Saturday night and cooled off the South Bend St. Joe Indians 65-48.

Warsaw got off to a slow start, trailing 9-2 when Coach Matt Moore took time out with 4:53 left in the first quarter. That hit the reset button for the Tigers, who scored 9 of the last 13 points of the period to trail 13-12.

Warsaw played better in the second quarter in a back-and-forth affair that featured six lead changes in the first 16 minutes, but still trailed by a 23-22 count at intermission.

When the third quarter started, the game changed. Even though both teams had played on the road Friday, the Tigers seemed to have a lot more left in the tank. Led by Jaxson Gould's 9 points, Luke Yeager's 6 and Drew Heckaman's 5, Warsaw outscored St. Joe 20-9 in the third quarter to take a 10-point, 42-32 lead into the final quarter.

Warsaw (4-2) put 23 on the board in the fourth to pull away to the 18 point win, giving them back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Heckaman became the focal point of the offense in the second half.

"They stayed out on our shooters, and that left the middle of the court open for Drew," Moore said in his post-game interview on News Now Warsaw. "Drew is an excellent driver and you saw tonight what he can do when that happens."

Heckaman led the Tigers with 19--14 of those after halftime. Gould added 13 and Yeager 10.

Warsaw gets this week off from game action before playing three games in two days in their holiday tournament next Tuesday and Wednesday.
