The Warsaw Tiger Wrestling team got their first action of the 22-23 season at the Wawasee Duals on Saturday.
The Tigers took second place in the 6-team field with a 4-1 record overall. Â
Warsaw started the morning strong with a 72-6 win against Fort Wayne South Side. In the dual, the Tigers picked up 8 wins by pinfall and surrendered just one loss.
Round two paired Warsaw with the hosts and NLC rival, Wawasee. While many matches went the distance and battled in tight bouts, Warsaw was only able to pick up three wins in the dual and fell 18-61.
The Tigers bounced back in round three and generated momentum that pushed them into a strong finish. Facing a South Bend Washington team battling some injuries, Warsaw again took a 72-6 win on the strength of 4 pins and a collection of forfeits.
Warsaw took on a scrappy Fairfield team in round four. With the early matches being fought tooth-and-nail, Warsaw picked up some important pins to run away with a 59-9 win.
In the final dual of the afternoon, Warsaw and North Miami got after each other. The contest saw six lead changes in the team score. In the end, Warsaw was able to put together a run of wins by pinfall that put the score out of reach and closed the day with a 42-28 victory.
Warsaw had two wrestlers go undefeated during the tournament.
At 126 pounds, Isaiah Martinez earned two pins on his path to 5-0. Gideon Castro was also 5-0 in the heavyweight division. Castro grabbed two wins by pin and also picked up a major decision along the way.
Four Tigers went home with four wins.
Danny Moon was able to earn pins in all four of his victories for the day at 152 pounds. Aiden Lozier saw his first action as a varsity regular and earned two wins by pin at 160 pounds. At 182 pounds, Jaxson Walters picked up a win by pin and another major decision to cap off his day, and 220-pounder Isaac Beam grabbed three wins by pin .
12 of the 13 wrestlers in the lineup during the tournament came home with at least three wins. Â
Warsaw's record to start the season is now 4-1 and 0-1 in the NLC.Â
