The Tiger wrestling team got back in the win column with a Thursday night, NLC road victory against Goshen by a score of 39-31.
Warsaw started the contest with back-to-back wins by pin at 285 pounds and 106 pounds. In the heavyweight matchup, Gideon Castro controlled the action early and put together some solid combinations on top to earn the pin. Bryce McNees put in a very efficient effort at 106 by taking the early takedown and locking up the pinfall.
Goshen's first win of the night came at 113, where the Tigers battled well but ultimately lost by pinfall.
With a 12-6 lead heading into the 120 pound matchup, the Tigers picked up another pair of wins by pin. Elias Garza was able to generate offense early in the match at 120 before sealing the match by pinfall. At 126, Isaiah Martinez battled through a slim deficit heading into the second period but worked a takedown into a pinfall to put the Tigers up 24-6.
Goshen picked up a nail-biter of a decision at 132 and a major decision at 138 to narrow the margin to 24-13.
At 145 pounds, Aaron Ross controlled the scoring for most of the match and narrowly missed on a pin and would settle for a hard-fought win by decision to make the score 27-13. Â
Goshen put together a run in the next four weight classes that would give them their first lead of the night.
The Redhawks took a win via pin at 152 and 160, then were able to only scratch out narrow decisions at 170 and 182 in some of the closest and most exciting matches of the night.
Heading into the final two matches, Warsaw trailed 27-31.
Nathaniel Rosas powered his way to a strong takedown and pinfall at 195 pounds to move the Tigers in front 33-31 going into the last matchup.
From there, Isaac Beam would follow suit with a show of power that sealed the victory for Warsaw. Beam needed just 39 seconds to earn his pinfall at 220 pounds to wrap up the night, giving Warsaw a 39-31 win. Â
In what ended up being a show of both programs' roster depth, several JV matches were contested prior to the varsity start. Â
JV winners for Warsaw were Natalie Davis (by pin), Brody Duncan (pin), Kolten Sisk (pin), and German Flores (8-4 decision).
Warsaw's overall record is now 5-2 and 1-2 in the NLC.
