Wrestling wins home opener against Goshen

The Tiger Wrestling team hosted the Goshen RedHawks on a rowdy night in the Tiger Den, topping the visitors by a 40-32 team score.

The varsity action started with the teams trading forfeits at 106 and 113, but things escalated quickly.  A hotly contested match at 120 ended with a late Goshen pin, but Isaiah Martinez answered right back with a pin at 126 to knot the score.

Goshen took the lead again with a pin at 132, but Danny Moon stepped up to add 6 team points with a pin of his own at 138.

The 145-pound class saw the night's first decision as Goshen squeezed out a takedown at the edge in the first period and held on to secure a 2-1 victory.

Andrew Ross dominated the action at 152, but couldn't completely put the match away as Goshen scrapped for every inch to save points.  The 13-0 major decision by Ross put Warsaw back in front for a brief moment.

Another match decided by brief moments and lots of action followed at 160 as Goshen was able to hold on against a late rally to earn a 4-3 decision and 3 more team points.

170 pounds saw another tight battle as Goshen pulled out a win by decision to extend their lead to 27-22.

At 182, Noah Wilkins wrestled his best match of the season and made the most of the opportunity presented deep in the third period to bring home a win by pin and regain the lead for the Tigers.

Goshen's final win of the evening came at 195 after a lineup swap put a more experienced wrestler into the spot to grab a win by pin and take their final lead.

Isaac Beam continued his upward trend as the Tiger 220-pounder controlled the tempo and positioning of the match before locking up a cradle for the pinfall.  The conclusion of the match saw Warsaw take back the lead and Goshen lose a team point for misconduct.

Gideon Castro came into the final bout of the night with the weight of the team outcome on his shoulders.  The undersized heavyweight rallied from a 2-0 first period deficit to earn an 8-3 lead before putting the Goshen 285 on his back and taking home the pinfall victory.

The 40-32 team victory puts Warsaw at 3-2 for the season and 1-2 in the NLC.  Warsaw will wrap up their busy week on Saturday when they host the Warsaw Super Duals.

Warsaw and Goshen also had a solid lineup of matches in JV action prior to the varsity start.

Grant Cook followed a first period takedown with a quick pin at 145.

A trio of wrestlers at 195 put together a string of wins as Tiger Football was well represented on the mat.

Braxton Daniels gritted out a 10-7 victory, then Mason Gabrich and Harrison Stofer both locked up takedowns before squeezing out pinfall victories.
