Wrestling Loses Close Match with Vikings

The Warsaw Tiger Wrestling team hosted Tippecanoe Valley on Wednesday night. The evening was kicked off as the Tigers recognized the senior class and their families for senior night.

After Bryson Brown won a decision victory in the only JV match of the evening, the visiting Vikings jumped out to an 18-0 lead after three pins at 220, 285, and 106.

The Tigers got on the board at 113 as Camron McNees took the mat for his first varsity match and earned a first-period pinfall.

Valley answered right back with a pin at 120 pounds before Warsaw's Maddox Lozier and Aaron Ross received forfeits at 126 and 132 to put the team score at 18-24 before the intermission.

Senior wrestler, Jose Martinez bumped up to 138 for the night to have a chance to close his dual career at WCHS on the mat instead of taking a forfeit. Martinez navigated the extra weight with precision as he earned three takedowns and a nearfall to win a 9-1 major decision.

Andrew Ross followed the lineup shift by moving to 145 for the night. Ross was able to pick up six big points for the Tigers with a first-period pin to put Warsaw ahead for the first time at 28-24.

At 152, Kevin Fouts (a first-year wrestler and senior) took the mat for his final home dual, but was unable to pick up a win and Valley took another six points back.

Valley got another six points at 160 to push their lead to 36-28.

Warsaw got big points from it's pair of seniors at 170 and 182.

Jacob Linky closed out his dual career in the Tiger Den by racking up 5 early takedowns before putting the match away with a pin in the second period.

Brandon Estepp followed up with an early takedown and pin to put Warsaw back on top at 40-36.

In the night's final match, Valley took home the win by earning a pin at 195 and walking out with a 42-40 team score.

The loss puts the Tiger's dual record for the season at 5-10. Warsaw will be on the mats at New Prairie on Saturday and then will turn their attention to hosting the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament on January 16.
